Teacher Appreciation Week Giveaway!

Hello, friends!

We’ve all seen the posts and the memes: “Teachers Are Rock Stars!” “I’m a Teacher; What’s Your Superpower?” But do any of us ever really feel like “rock stars” or superheroes?

I know I don’t. Like, ever.

That’s why I want to do a giveaway for Teacher Appreciation Week that just celebrates teachers for being teachers. For showing up every day–ok, almost every day–in service to students. For taking care of business. For doing the damn work.

We all know the work can be incredibly rewarding. But it’s also some of the most physically, emotionally, and mentally draining work there is. We have to take time to practice self-care so we can feel refreshed, renewed, and ready to take on the next part of the work.

So I ask you: what do you do to renew?

Here’s what I do (no judgement, please–this is a safe space!): I hike along the trails in my neighborhood. I bang out a couple of episodes of Judge Judy on my DVR. I go out for coffee with my friends and gossip about the Kardashians. I make art.

Comment below about the things you do to renew, and I’ll draw a name on Friday (5/11/18) and send one person a signed copy of my book from Stenhouse, Renew! Become a Better–and More Authentic–Writing Teacher. If you already have a copy of Renew!, no worries–gift it to a colleague! We all know that books make the best gifts.

Enjoy your week–and don’t forget to refresh and renew!

xo, Shawna

  1. This is so kind of you, Shawna! To renew, I walk our Golden, Leo, carve out some time for some yoga to ground me, and read as much as I can! (This is one of the only ways I actually stay off my feet!) Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! I appreciate your words and your sense of humor!

    4) read.
    5) grade papers 🤦🏻‍♀️

  3. Happy Teacher Appreciation Day to you. So many ways to renew and refuel. Midday, I always spend a little time reading blogs and professional books that remind or teach me ways to improve. I’m so inspired by my virtual peers.

  4. Continuously learn— twitter, blogs, colleagues!

Ask the students what’s working and not.

    Independent writing projects.

    Personally —

I tuck my kids in every night, read and chat with them.
I take time to write for myself every day. Go outside!

  5. When I go home, I try to spend my time “in the moment”. Focus on my family and kids. They deserve my full attention when I am with them. Sometimes it’s hard to not think about work though. It really helps when we get up to our little cabin, with no internet. I typically don’t even think about work when I am there. Helps me “do and be” better when I am at work.

  6. Thanks you, Shawna! Love following you on Twitter. I read YA, hike with my dog, and read inspiring PD books (honestly! I need to absorb the hope and good vibes sometimes!). Oh, and grab beers on the patio with friends now that it’s spring! Thank YOU for all you do and sharing your wealth of knowledge!
